Analysis

Discussion:

Discussion is the main plot of this radio show as it runs throughout and develops. In this show, the subject was peoples' first names. The presenter gave personal anecdotes and received several responses from listeners with stories about their first names. The format used was a relaxed chat about the subject with no final aim, just sharing stories. This was the second most common content due to its many segments throughout the show, discussion is often the focus of the show so can be used to keep people listening to hear the end or to know more. First names can be an interesting subject, perhaps some listeners may have an intriguing given name which may be fascinating to an older audience but may not be exciting enough to keep a younger audiences attention.

Travel and News:

These segments are frequently occurring throughout the schedule to keep listeners up to date on events and transport news. The reporter speaks quickly but clearly to deliver important news to people who need it. Some of the news can be more local to you than other pieces which can seem irrelevant. The quality of news is quite high because it gives the local and national headlines as well as major traffic news and updates. This information is given regularly (possibly at 15 minute intervals) and receives the time necessary however the delivery is quick, suggesting they are hurried. News can be very important to adults who it matters more to, however, younger generations may use other media outlets to get their news.

Package:

Package was the largest section of this radio show extract. The package was made by John Devine about an Ancient Egyptian display in a local pub. It was well put together, it had an interview, information and Vox pops all pre-recorded. The presenter made the subject entertaining because of his tone and enthusiasm. The topic is heavily irrelevant to most of the listeners but it is interesting, younger generations feel that they do not have as much time to listen to something that does not matter to them but older people tend to be more patient.

Sweepers:

Several different sweepers were used on this program. They are pre-recorded talking about the show and the radio station. The sweepers were mixed tracks of two voices over music, they seem like typical sweepers because of their interesting voices over chosen tracks of styles that the target audience might like. Advertising the show can attract the attention of a passive listen, symbolize the arrival of a new segment or remind the listener what station they are listening to. It can seem peculiar that they advertise the station that the listener is already listening to but it does its purpose as a sweeper to connect different pieces.
